INEC clears 1.68m voters for FCT area council poll
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cleared 1,680,315 registered voters to participate in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections scheduled for February 21.
The commission also announced the publication and presentation of the revised register of voters for the poll.
Presenting the register on Wednesday in Abuja at a stakeholders’ meeting with political parties, the FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Malam Aminu Idris, said the exercise was a key constitutional requirement in INEC’s preparations for the election.
Idris said the figure represents an increase from the 1,570,307 voters recorded in the 2023 register, noting that detailed statistics of the revised register were made available to political parties at the meeting.
The REC said INEC had made significant progress in its preparations for the poll, which will fill six chairmanship and 62 councillorship seats, and urged political parties to maintain peace and intensify voter mobilisation.
He also disclosed that Permanent Voter Cards for newly registered voters and those who updated their details had arrived in the FCT, with collection dates to be announced later.
