2027: APC Makes U Turn, Replaces Uzodimma as Convention Chair
The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday stunned political watchers with a major reordering of its convention leadership.
In a move that has injected fresh suspense into the ruling party’s internal calendar, the APC replaced Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma with former Katsina State governor, Aminu Bello Masari, as Chairman of the National Convention Central Coordination Committee.
The appointment of Masari, comes only days after Uzodimma was unveiled as chairman of the crucial preparatory body for the party’s March 27–28, 2026 convention.
The move has been described as a major role in the build up to the party’s March 27 and 28, 2026 national convention.
In a statement signed by the APC National Secretary, Surajudeen Basiru, on Friday, the party said the committee was reconstituted following “further consultations with its leadership and national stakeholders”.
Political watchers have described the decision as an aggressive revamps of its internal structures in preparation for the 2026 congresses ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Uzodimma has now been reassigned to serve as Treasurer of the committee under the new arrangement.
The party also expanded the membership of the committee from 73 to 90 to accommodate additional party chieftains like Senator Barry Mpigi and other senior party figures.
Under the revised structure, former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, was named Vice Chairman I, while Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, will serve as Vice Chairman II.
The sudden alteration of the committee’s leadership has added a fresh layer of intrigue to the APC’s convention preparations.
This year, the party extended its nationwide electronic membership registration exercise to February 8, 2026, amid a broader push to expand its base and update its membership database.
Ward congresses are now scheduled for February 18, with local government, state, zonal and ultimately national convention activities detailed in a recalibrated timetable.
These preparations have been described as part of the APC’s efforts to bolster internal democracy and organisational strength ahead of the 2027 polls.
The party’s national leaders have publicly emphasised the importance of orderly congresses as a means to renew party leadership structures and position the party for the forthcoming electoral cycle.
At the same time, the inclusion of additional party figures in the expanded committee is being seen as an attempt to reflect wider zoning considerations and stakeholder interests within APC structures.
Political analysts say the coming days will reflect whether the party is sensitive to the high stakes of intra-party elections and unity while opposition parties navigate their own internal struggles ahead of 2027.
