FG to empower 10,000 women with tricycle, motorcycle loans

The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation, has formally rolled out the 10,000 Women in Mobility programme, aimed at economically empowering women across Nigeria.

The initiative is designed to provide women in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory access to vehicles, tricycles (commonly called Keke), and motorcycles.

By doing so, it seeks to enable women to participate in transportation, logistics, delivery services, and other mobility-related ventures, boosting both their financial independence and economic participation.

Speaking on Friday during the launch and handover of the mobility assets, the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, emphasized the importance of creating economic spaces for women.

She noted that the Abuja pilot phase had already handed over vehicles to 1,000 women, with the programme set to expand nationwide to reach 10,000 beneficiaries.

She said the initiative helps women build credible financial histories, which can unlock future access to credit.

According to her: “It’s an economic empowerment. It’s how much they drive it and how many hours they put into it. There’s no economic effort that is a chicken feed.

“Mr. President has a goal of a $1 trillion economy, and we have all come together across sectors to ensure that we activate economic spaces and also carry women along.

“Because women are over 50 per cent of the population of this country, and they participate across sectors, so we will like to strengthen their participation so that it translates into value, not just for them and their families, but for the country at large.”

Sulaiman-Ibrahim also applauded CREDICORP Managing Director, Uzoma Nwagba, for championing inclusive access to consumer credit and translating policy into tangible economic opportunities for women.

Nwagba disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.

In their goodwill messages, several stakeholders praised the programme. Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha; Director General, National Automotive Design and Development Council, Oluwemimo Osanipin; and National President, National Council for Women Society, Princess Edna Azura, described it as a timely intervention to expand women’s participation in the mobility and transport sector.

Onyejeocha highlighted the societal impact: “Before now, it’s strange for people to say they’re riding commercial tricycles or commercial vehicles, but with Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President and from skilling up artisans, you know that every person, whether you’re a man, woman, girl, you can become a driver today. So it’s cutting across the whole sector of the economy.”

Meanwhile, Nwagba described the programme as a practical step towards expanding financial inclusion and deepening Nigeria’s consumer credit ecosystem.

He explained that CREDICORP is partnering with key stakeholders to integrate financing, asset supply, training, and business support, ensuring that beneficiaries do more than just access credit—they can succeed in their mobility businesses.

He assured: “The agency will continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure the success, transparency, and sustainability of the programme nationwide.”

The programme has already handed over the first 300 locally assembled tricycles and is expected to empower up to 10,000 women across the six geopolitical zones.

Under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, it aims to boost incomes, deepen financial inclusion, and strengthen Nigeria’s mobility sector, the release concluded.
