PDP crisis: Turaki-led NWC issues expulsion letters to Wike, Anyanwu, others
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued formal expulsion letters to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and several others expelled at the party’s last national convention in Ibadan. Addressing journalists after a meeting at the Bauchi Governor’s Lodge in Abuja on Tuesday, National Chairman Kabiru Turaki (SAN) said the move was in line with the Nigerian constitution, which prohibits dual membership of political parties. At the November 15–16 national convention, the party expelled Wike, National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Organising Secretary Mallam Umar Bature, and other members. Turaki explained that the expulsion letters serve as certificates confirming their removal from the party, allowing them to join other political parties without legal complications. “Now that they are no longer members of our party, these certificates will serve as proof for registration with other parties, ensuring no accusations of dual membership,” he said. The certificates have been dispatched via courier to the 11 expelled members: Wike, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, Anyanwu, Bature, Kamarudeen Ajibade (SAN), Abdurahman Muhammad, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, Austin Nwachukwu, Abraham Amah Nnanna, George Turna, and Chief Dan Orbih. Turaki said the move ensures that agencies such as INEC, the police, DSS, and other government bodies are aware of their status.
Turaki emphasised that the party remains committed to providing credible opposition leadership and preparing for the 2027 elections, while asserting that the expelled members no longer represent the PDP in any capacity.
Despite the expulsions, the Wike-backed faction has moved to fill leadership gaps in the South-East. National Organising Secretary Bature announced a nine-member South-East Caretaker Committee, effective December 2, 2025, tasked with managing party affairs in the region for up to 30 days, in accordance with Section 21(2)(a-b) of the PDP constitution.
