General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi was the first military head of state in Nigeria’s history and the second president after the country gained independence. He governed for only six months, from January to July 1966. This military hero, well-versed in warfare, exhibited weaknesses in the governance of the civil administration. He assumed leadership after quashing an attempted coup by military officers that overthrew the civilian government. However, the measures he took during his leadership led to dissent within the Nigerian military, ultimately resulting to a dangerous incident during a retaliatory coup.
