Voices from the streets: APC, NNPP supporters speak on Gov Yusuf’s defection rumours
As rumours of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection to the APC reach a fever pitch, the political conversation in Kano has moved from the corridors of power to the streets. Supporters from both camps are weighing in, with their views highlighting a mix of tactical calculations, loyalty, and deep-seated apprehension.
APC perspective: “Our house, our rules” Abdulmajid Dan Bulki Kwamanda (APC chieftain):
“Gov. Abba is afraid of what he will meet in the APC. My advice to him? Go back to your boss. The APC in Kano is bigger than what Abba can handle. We have already perfected our plans to reclaim power in 2027, and we won’t fold our arms while someone drops in to render our efforts useless. He can partake in the primaries, but an automatic ticket is out of the question.”
Ismail Muhammad (APC supporter):
“The APC will benefit more because not every NNPP loyalist will follow the governor. We have an established system here. When he arrives, he is coming into our home; he will have to ride on the system we already have in place.”
Abdulmalik Hamza (APC Supporter):
“The APC stands to gain because it is populated by experienced politicians. The people the governor is bringing with him are not as vast or as experienced as the ones he will meet in our party. The NNPP might benefit, but not nearly as much as the APC.”
Usaini Muhammad Ibrahim (APC supporter):
“The governor is joining an already established political family. This means leaders like Ganduje and Abdullahi Abbas will have a 50/50 share of whatever happens. Everything, even government appointments, will be on their terms because he met them in their house.”
Anas Sulaiman Shuaibu (APC supporter):
“People are talking about a 60/40 power-sharing formula, but the way I see it, the APC could dominate entirely and take 60 per cent. We hold the leverage.”
Muhammad Inuwa Auwal (NNPP supporter):
“Defecting means a total break from the Kwankwasiyya movement. Once those ties are cut, the benefits will only be shared among those who move with the governor and the APC members he joins. It is a complete realignment of interest
Anonymous Special Adviser (NNPP government):
“Kano’s ruling party is held together by loyalty to personalities, not institutions. If the governor leaves, the structure will fracture. Lawmakers and commissioners will be forced to choose between the governor and Kwankwaso. This won’t be a ‘cosmetic’ split; it could spark intense rivalry and even unrest if not managed carefully.”
