Kwara attack: Tinubu vows to defeat terrorism
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has condemned the deadly attack in Kwara State, vowing that his administration will defeat those who seek to “divide us through terror.”
Daily Trust had reported how at least 100 persons were murdered in cold blood in Woro and neighbouring communities, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State on Tuesday
In a statement on Thursday, the President said he met with the Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, to receive a briefing on the incident.
While condemning the incident in the strongest terms as a “cowardly and beastly attack,” Tinubu said the gunmen were heartless for targeting defenceless communities in what he described as a doomed campaign of terror.
He added that such actions offend Nigeria’s humanity, faith and shared national values.
“Yesterday, I directed the immediate deployment of an army battalion to Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State following the horrific attack on innocent villagers in Worro. This new military command will spearhead Operation Savannah Shield to checkmate these barbaric terrorists and protect defenceless communities,” the President said.
He described as particularly disturbing the claim that the victims were targeted for resisting an attempt at forced indoctrination.
“It is commendable that the community members, even though Muslims, refused to be conscripted into a weird belief that promoted violence over peace and dialogue,” Tinubu said, adding that Nigeria would never surrender its people to extremism and terrorism disguised as faith.
The President further directed close collaboration between federal and state agencies to provide immediate support and relief to the affected communities and to ensure that those responsible for the attack are pursued and brought to justice.
“I have also directed close collaboration between federal and state agencies to provide immediate support and relief to the affected community and to ensure that those responsible for this atrocity are pursued and brought to justice. They will not go scot-free,” he said.
Tinubu prayed for the repose of the souls of the victims and extended condolences to their families, as well as to the people and government of Kwara State.
“The Federal Government stands with you. We will protect our communities, defend our values and defeat those who seek to divide us through terror,” the statement concluded.
