Jos traders killed on highway buried in Barkin Ladi
The bodies of traders who were attacked and killed on their way from Jos to the Pankshin Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State have been recovered and buried in the Barkin Ladi LGA.
The victims, who relatives said traveled to Pankshin weekly for shoe trading, were buried on Monday evening at the Sabon Anguwa cemetery in Barkin Ladi town.
Government sources told Daily Trust that the victims were buried away from their immediate communities to avert the tension brewing in those areas following reports of the killings. The victims were residents of the Yandoya community in the Jos North LGA.
Our correspondent reports that upon receiving news of the deaths, local youths gathered to demand the release of the corpses, a situation that prompted security authorities to deploy personnel to restore order.
Danjuma Ibrahim, a youth leader in Barkin Ladi, confirmed the burial.
“Earlier Monday afternoon, we were contacted and told that the corpses of the traders would be brought to us in Barkin Ladi for burial. We later received them and performed the funeral rites. It was done here in Barkin Ladi to douse tension in Jos,” Ibrahim said.
“There were six traders in total, but two escaped the ordeal. We buried four. We are calling on people in the state to remain calm and law-abiding. We also urge the government and security agencies to do the needful to bring an end to the growing violence in the affected communities,” the youth leader added.
