FG vows stronger water regulations
The Executive Director of the Nigeria Integrated Water Resources Management Commission (NIWRMC), Dr. Abdulmumini Aminu Zaria, has expressed stronger commitment to water governance reform and national development. Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Dr. Zaria explained that NIWRMC was the national regulatory body responsible for planning, managing and regulating water resources shared by more than one state and mandated to licence water use, allocation planning, monitoring and enforcement, protection of water bodies and conflict resolution. He said the commission had addressed some of the issues by introducing reforms focused on restoring order, strengthening systems and motivating staff. He listed his achievements within the first 100 days to include staff engagement meetings, the inauguration of a think tank team and the revival of catchment management offices nationwide. Dr. Zaria said the actions had improved data availability, staff morale, institutional visibility and collaboration with other government bodies.
