Niger to reopen schools in 4 LGAs Jan 12
The Niger State Government has announced plans to reopen schools in only four local government areas: Bida, Suleja, Chanchaga and parts of Bosso, out of the state’s 25 LGAs on January 12, 2026.
Out of the 45 boarding schools owned by the state, only 18 located within the four LGAs will resume as the others have not received security clearance to reopen.
The Commissioner for Basic Education, Dr Hadiza Asabe Mohammed, disclosed this during an inter-ministerial stakeholders’ meeting ahead of the reopening, explaining that the schools would resume in phases, depending on the security situation across the state.
She said, “Some schools will reopen on Monday, January 12, 2026. We agreed to reopen schools in phases because we cannot reopen all schools at once due to the security challenges facing Niger State.”
She noted that only schools located within towns and cities in the four LGAs would reopen, while those on the outskirts remained closed.
Dr Hadiza added that local government chairmen had been directed to recruit community security personnel to protect schools within their jurisdictions.
She further revealed that arrangements had been made for online teaching and learning across the state to ensure continued access to education for pupils in areas where schools remained closed.
Meanwhile, the Director-General, Niger State Education and School Reform, Hajiya Maimuna Mohammed, announced that private schools had been banned from operating boarding facilities for nursery and primary school pupils.
