ABU, Huawei partner to revamp ICT infrastructure, launch smart campus project
The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Huawei Technologies Nigeria Ltd to upgrade its ICT infrastructure and implement the Huawei Smart Campus Project.
The MoU was signed by the Vice-Chancellor of ABU, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, and Mr. Mars Zhangmi, Director, Enterprise Delivery Service, Huawei Technologies Nigeria Ltd.
Speaking at the signing ceremony in Zaria, Prof. Ahmed said the partnership was aimed at overhauling the university’s obsolete network infrastructure, noting that much of the existing equipment had reached the end of its life cycle and required replacement to prevent disruption of IT services.
He said the upgrade would enhance blended learning, enabling students to engage lecturers remotely, while graduates and international tutors from countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom would connect seamlessly with the university.
He noted that ABU’s Distance Learning Centre, one of the largest in Nigeria, would be expanded to accommodate more students, particularly those unable to secure admission through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
According to him, over three million candidates apply for admission annually, but only about 30 per cent gain entry, a gap the enhanced ICT capacity would help address.
Mr. Zhangmi said the initiative aligned with the shared commitment of ABU and Huawei to develop talent and provide cutting-edge digital infrastructure to boost research and development.
In a presentation, Huawei Senior Account Manager, Esther Anigbo, said the Smart Campus Solution, including the iMaster NCE platform, would enable centralised management of devices across all campuses and enhance disaster recovery and network design.
