John Udomboso, widely known as Young John, built a formidable reputation long before he ever stepped behind a microphone. As a producer, he shaped some of the last decade’s biggest afrobeats moments, crafting hits such as ‘Bobo’ by Olamide, ‘Efejoku’ by Lil Kesh, ‘Mama’ by Kizz Daniel and ‘Mafo’ by Naira Marley. His crisp, energetic production earned him the nickname “wicked producer”.
During his time with the YBNL collective, Young John grew into a household name. He was ranked third on The NET’s list of Nigeria’s top music producers and earned nominations for Producer of the Year at both the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards and The Headies.
By 2022, he began a bold repositioning. Rather than remain behind the console, he stepped into the spotlight as a recording artiste. That year became a turning point. His single ‘Dada’ went viral and later featured Davido on the remix.
He followed it with chart-toppers ‘Xtra Cool’ and ‘If You Leave’, closing the year with the release of his EP, ‘Love Is Not Enough’.
In 2024, Young John cemented his transition with his debut album, ‘Jiggy Forever’, which housed collaborations with Kizz Daniel, Seyi Vibez, Don Jazzy and Zlatan. Speaking with Apple Music about the project, he explained that “Jiggy” is a lifestyle that simply means staying fly and trying to stay above the waters regardless of what’s going on in your life. He added, “It’s just vibes that carry the energy and emotions I felt at different times, in different places and different moments.”
The momentum carried into 2025 with the release of his sophomore album, ‘Blue Disco’, featuring a strong lineup that includes Wizkid, Asake, Rema and DJ Tunez.
Reflecting on the evolution of his sound, Young John noted that his production had always leaned toward emotional depth, shaped by his upbringing in a church environment. He said those early influences still guide him, adding that he lets the rhythm settle into him before building his melodies on top.
