Former Liverpool midfielder, Danny Murphy, has criticised Mohamed Salah’s decision to go public with his frustration after being left out of the side, warning that the forward’s comments risk disrupting the dressing room and piling pressure on manager, Arne Slot.
As reported by BBC Sport on Sunday, Murphy acknowledged that Salah would naturally be “emotional, angry and frustrated” at losing his place but insisted that such grievances should be handled privately.
“He needs to take it to the manager or the owners if he has a problem.
“By airing it publicly, he’s creating an issue for the team and for the manager. You can’t deal with it that way,” Murphy said.
Salah is due to join Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations on December 15 potentially keeping him away from Liverpool until mid-January depending on the team’s progress.
Meanwhile, the club are said to be open to discussions about his long-term future amid renewed interest from Saudi Arabia.
Murphy stressed that competition for places is unavoidable and that several senior players have been under scrutiny during Liverpool’s inconsistent run.
“Everyone is being judged,” he said. “Big names are getting criticism, not just him.”
Despite the tension, Murphy believes the situation can still be resolved and expects Salah to return to play for the club.
“I think he’ll calm down and things will be resolved.
“A player of his stature deserves to leave on good terms when the time comes. I just hope this doesn’t turn into a messy ending,” he added.
With Salah’s contract running until 2026, Liverpool retain control over any potential exit, but Murphy suggested the door could open in January if the player pushes hard for a move.
PUNCH Online had reported that Salah expressed frustration over his limited playing time, claiming that someone within the club wants him to take the blame for recent setbacks.
