After nearly two years away from the spotlight, afrobeats act Denny Zee has opened up on why he stepped back from the music scene and what fans can expect from his new artistic direction.
The Epe-born singer, songwriter and producer, who has returned with a fresh single titled Werk, said the hiatus was a necessary pause to restrategise and reinvent himself. He expressed confidence that the new track will surpass the success of his previous hits, Joh, Bana and Tender.
Formerly signed to Nuul Gang, a Sweden-based record label owned by an international DJ, Denny Zee said his time with the outfit broadened his global exposure through collaborations and international releases that expanded his artistic reach.
Speaking on his time away, he said, “I took the short break to strategize, and now I’m stepping into a new era of rebranding, redefining my identity and sound.
My upcoming projects — including new singles and a highly anticipated EP — promise a richer, bolder expression of my message: joy, hustle, struggle, resilience, and the unapologetic pursuit of dreams, wrapped in the allure of a confident, charismatic artist who isn’t afraid to show both his strength and sensuality.”
He added, “I’m presently standing at the intersection of soul and sound — a singer, songwriter, and producer shaping the next wave of Afro music with authenticity, creativity, and unshakable drive. Open to collaboration and new sonic adventures. I’m not just chasing success; I’m building a legacy, one record at a time.”
Raised in Lagos, the singer’s sound blends Afrobeat, Afrofusion, Afroswing and Reggaeton, tinged with R&B and Soul a fusion he describes as music that “grooves and moves, but also speaks.”
Beyond his own records, Denny Zee has contributed as a songwriter and producer to works of major artistes including Rude Boy of P-Square and the duo Bracket. His imprint, he noted, runs deep across the scene through storytelling, melody and emotion crafted with precision.
