Contemporary artist, David Olatoye, has concluded his two-day exhibition, ‘To Your Doorstep’, on a high note in Ibadan, Oyo State, marking a significant moment of homecoming, community engagement, and artistic reflection.
Held at the New Culture Studio, the exhibition represented Olatoye’s first major presentation in the city where much of his early artistic language was developed. Curated by Francis Ugbomeh, aka Papi, the exhibition attracted a diverse audience of artists, collectors, writers, students, and creative enthusiasts from Ibadan, Osogbo, Abeokuta, and surrounding cities.
Over the course of two days, the exhibition recorded active engagement, underscoring Olatoye’s reputation not only as a contemporary artist but also as a strong advocate of community-driven artistic practice. According to the curator, the turnout highlighted the importance of returning creative work to the environments in which they were conceived.
“David has always believed in the power of community. Seeing creatives from Ibadan and its environs show up in such numbers reaffirmed that this was more than an exhibition; it was a shared moment,” Ugbomeh said.
The exhibition featured works produced between 2021 and 2025, many of which were created in Ibadan but had never previously been exhibited in the city. Executed in pen and acrylic on canvas, the paintings explored themes of domestic interiors, family presence, and memory
Reflecting on the exhibition, Olatoye expressed deep satisfaction with the outcome, describing the experience as both overwhelming and affirming. He noted that while his works have been exhibited in Lagos and internationally, this marked the first time the community where many of the works were created had the opportunity to engage with them fully.
“The love was massive,” the artist said. “To show these works here, among the people and places that shaped them, made everything feel complete.”
