ECOWAS warns against violations of Venezuela's sovereignty after US action
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has voiced concern over the latest developments in Venezuela, warning that actions taken in the name of fighting crime must still respect international law and national sovereignty.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, ECOWAS said it was closely following events in the South American country after the detention of Venezuela’s president by the United States, a move that has triggered global diplomatic fallout.

While acknowledging the right of states to combat serious international crimes such as terrorism and drug trafficking, the regional bloc stressed that such efforts must not undermine the independence or territorial integrity of other nations.
“ECOWAS wishes to remind the international community of its obligation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, as enshrined in international law, particularly the United Nations Charter,” the organisation said.

The West African body aligned itself with a statement released by the African Union on January 3, which called for restraint and urged all sides in Venezuela to pursue inclusive dialogue rather than escalation.
ECOWAS said it stood in solidarity with the Venezuelan people and supported their right to determine the future of their country through a peaceful and inclusive process.
