Digital Newsroom: We’ve Built an Institution That Will Outlive Us – Kabiru Yusuf
Chairman of Media Trust Group, Malam Kabiru Yusuf, says the company has built a strong institution that will endure beyond its founders.
Yusuf spoke as the company transitioned into a new era of digital journalism via its Project Evolution, unveiling of its Digital Newsroom.
He described the development as a major milestone in the company’s 25-year journey.
Reflecting on the changing face of the profession, the Media Trust chairman said he was encouraged by the influx of young professionals into the newsroom.
“When I walk into the newsroom and I see so many new faces, young people, most of whom I haven’t met before, and I think most of them don’t even know me, maybe they hear my name, I say to myself that the journey has reached a point where those of us who began it should begin to find our way out,” Yusuf said.
He described the transition as a sign that the institution has matured and is ready for the future.
“It really is my pleasure to see the transition happening, to see that we have built an institution that hopefully will outlive all of us, including you, the young people,” he added.
Yusuf recalled the humble beginnings of the company, noting that Daily Trust was founded in a rented building over two decades ago.
“About 25 years ago, we were in a rented accommodation where we started the Daily Trust, and we had the ambition of owning our own premises. Here we are today,” he said.
Speaking on the new Digital Newsroom, the Media Trust chairman said he was initially curious about how the transition to a fully converged digital system would work but was impressed by what he saw.
“I was wondering how the adaptation of the digital newsroom would be done, but it’s been done well. And I’m happy to see you all seated, ready to work,” he said.
Yusuf said the company’s vision is to build a truly global media organisation.
“Our vision is to really grow this company. We say world class. I know vision and mission are things people write on paper, but we mean it. If you see how we started and where we have come to, you shouldn’t believe that the journey will not take us to where we want to be,” he said.
He urged younger members of staff to take ownership of the future of the organisation.
“So I hope you, the young people, are the ones who will do this job. I think you will see that even our body is changing; we will have more younger people there, and we’ll be happy to be occasional visitors to see you doing this job,” Yusuf added.
