Bayelsa govt declares 3-day mourning for Ewhrudjakpo
The Bayelsa State Government has declared a three-day mourning to honour the state’s deputy governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who died on Thursday at the age of 60.
Ewhrudjakpo reportedly slumped on Thursday afternoon while attending to official duties. He was confirmed dead shortly after arrival at the hospital.
Although government officials initially kept silent on the incident, the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was the first to publicly confirm his passing.
In a statement on Friday, the state Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Mrs Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, described the death as shocking and a major loss to the state.
According to her, Ewhrudjakpo was active earlier in the day and was moving to a scheduled meeting within his office complex when he collapsed.
She noted that Governor Douye Diri declared a three-day state mourning starting Friday, with all flags in the state to fly at half-mast in honour of the late deputy governor.
