EPL: Chelsea held by Burnley as Aston Villa snatch late draw

Chelsea’s push for UEFA Champions League qualification suffered a setback as Burnley grabbed a dramatic 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge, while Aston Villa were also forced to settle for a late 1-1 stalemate against Leeds United on Saturday.

The Blues moved into the Premier League’s top four only on goal difference after failing to build on João Pedro’s fourth-minute opener.

Chelsea dominated large spells but were dealt a decisive blow when Wesley Fofana was sent off with 18 minutes remaining for a second yellow card.

Burnley capitalised in stoppage time as Zian Flemming headed home from a corner in the 93rd minute, keeping the Clarets’ slim survival hopes alive and moving them to within eight points of safety.

At Villa Park, Unai Emery’s side continued their inconsistent run at home. Anton Stach stunned the hosts with a spectacular 40-yard free kick from a tight angle that caught Emiliano Martínez off guard at his near post.

Leeds, under Daniel Farke, have now lost just twice in their last 16 matches, easing concerns of being drawn into a relegation battle. However, Tammy Abraham rescued a point for Villa with a late equaliser two minutes from time.

With five Premier League clubs set to qualify for next season’s Champions League, thanks to strong performances by English sides in European competition, the race for top-four (and top-five) places remains intense.

Liverpool and Manchester United have opportunities to tighten the race further when they face Nottingham Forest and Everton in the coming days.
