Kano prioritises rural infrastructure dev’t – Commissioner

The Kano State Government said it is intensifying efforts to provide basic infrastructure across the state’s 44 local government areas to address long-standing developmental gaps in rural communities. The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Tajo Othman, disclosed this while outlining the policy direction and priority projects of the ministry under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration. Othman, in a statement, said the government is focusing on critical sectors such as primary healthcare, water supply, education, agriculture, electricity and rural roads, describing infrastructure development as key to improving living standards and boosting economic productivity. He noted that the ministry’s approach aligns with the governor’s commitment to fairness, justice and equitable distribution of resources across the state. According to him, dilapidated schools are being refurbished to enhance learning, while feeder roads are being constructed to help farmers transport produce to markets and strengthen agricultural value chains. He said the agenda is supported by strong budgetary backing, noting that in the state’s N1.368 trillion 2026 budget, education received 31 per cent, health 16 per cent, and infrastructure 25 per cent. The commissioner listed achievements in education to include the recruitment of over 6,000 teachers, absorption of 2,000 volunteer teachers, rehabilitation of thousands of classrooms and distribution of about 789,000 school uniforms. He added that tuition fees in state-owned tertiary institutions were reduced by 50 per cent, foreign postgraduate scholarships revived, and Kano ranked first nationwide in the 2025 NECO examinations. On health, Othman said UNICEF had commended the state for rural water and sanitation initiatives. He also disclosed a 2025 MoU with the Rural Electrification Agency to support solar projects across all local councils, adding that local government funds were released without interference.
