Balance must be struck to avoid ill feelings – Dr Sufi
Dr Kabiru Sufi is a Kano-based political analyst and in this interview, he speaks on what Governor Kabiru Yusuf’s resignation from the NNPP means for his former party among others.
What do you make of Governor Yusuf’s planned move to the APC?
That actually depends on the situation they meet in the APC as an already existing political party that has influential political office holders at the national level and also have other members at the state level, and of course the agreement reached with the people they meet at the APC.
What do you think will happen to the Kwankwasiyya movement after Abba’s exit?
As I have stated earlier, Governor Abba’s movement to APC will determine a lot about his political future within the APC. However, pulling out of NNPP may mean pulling out of Kwankwasiyya completely. However, I personally think that the Kwankwasiyya people who have decided to remain with the movement have stayed a long time and from what we are seeing it is like they have started showing some level of resilience.
Indicators are showing that the Kwankwasiyya is ready to move on with or without Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. This is to some extent a sign that the movement is ready to build and nurture some a newer group of people who will champion the movement at the state level.
Does it mean the Kwankwasiyya movement will continue even with the exit of Governor Abba?
Basically, this means that there is a possibility of the movement bringing out another gubernatorial candidate on the platform that they chose to go with and continue with the movement without Governor Abba Yusuf in the movement. Don’t forget they may also wish to bring up another political party entirely different from NNPP. This is something they have done before, and I believe they may not find it difficult in doing it again.
Personally, I believe this may likely be the future of the Kwankwasiyya movement in the state.
Don’t you think defecting to a party with a strong existing political structure may mean trouble for the defectors?
Not necessarily. That was why at the initial stage I said everything will depend on the situation they meet on ground and of course on how they are welcomed into the party. It may have happened that they already perfected their plans between both parties’ leadership on terms and conditions attached to the defection.
It is also believed that the agreement reached may be highly dependent on what the presidency decides to accept and work on. As you may have noticed the defection has taken the state and the country to another level of political calculations.
What do you suggest for both defectors and those receiving them for a better political future?
There should be a provision that will ensure that the two sides reach a balance in terms of political party equality and equal chances. It is clear that there is definitely going to be an issue in the political aspiration of Governor Abba and that of those that have been with the party for long and have been romancing the chance.
Therefore, there should be concern on what will be the new arrangement? Who is going to take what and who is going to leave what and for whom? Honestly, a lot will depend on that agreement.
It all depends on how effective they are able to manage the situation without hurting any party. The agreement should be that everyone feels included and important as the other.
