Why we increased sundry charges for 2025/2026 session – UNN

Following a truce between it and the Student Union Government (SUG), the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) at the weekend, approved a 60 per cent increase in sundry charges for her students for the 2025/2026 academic session.

Students and management of the institution had been on collision course over an initial 100 per cent proposed increment in all charges.

Apparently, perturbed by the dust raised by the initial proposal, the school’s management engaged in extensive consultation with the student body, during which compromises were made.

The University’s acting Public Relations Officer, Inya Agha Egwu, in a statement at the weekend, explained the new charges followed “constructive engagements with the Student Union Government of both the Nsukka and Enugu Campuses.”

He said that under the new arrangement, both new and returning students would pay 60 per cent above the existing sundry charges for the 2025/2026 session, representing a 40 per cent reduction from the original 100 per cent proposal.

Egwu added that a detailed schedule of the revised charges, broken down by faculty and level, is expected to be released to the university community in the coming days.

“The resolution is the outcome of weeks of sustained negotiations between the University and student leaders, which began in December 2025.

“During the discussions, student representatives explained that they had revised their earlier demand for a 30 per cent increase in recognition of prevailing fees in comparable universities and the urgent need to upgrade infrastructure in the University of Nigeria“, he added

He recalled that the University Council, through the Management, had earlier reduced the increment from 100 per cent to 90 per cent before agreeing to the students’ request for a 60 per cent increase.

“Following the Council’s concession, both parties formally signed an agreement outlining key provisions, including the payment of the new fees in two instalments across the two semesters to ease the financial burden on parents and guardians.

“The agreement also guarantees that there will be no increase in students’ accommodation fees for the 2025/2026 academic session”, he clarified.

The statement further said the SUG leadership expressed appreciation to the Governing Council for its understanding and responsiveness, urging students to remain calm and law-abiding.

It said the SUG also called on students to avoid actions that could disrupt the University’s peace and warned external individuals against interfering in student affairs or inciting unrest.
