Human rights not negotiable, says Anambra gov’s wife

The wife of the Anambra State governor, Nonye Soludo, has said that understanding and preserving human rights are what make a society stronger and better, adding that everyone — regardless of creed, culture, political, or religious differences — deserves the full rights of human dignity and fairness, in commemoration of the 2025 World Human Rights Day.

Human Rights Day is observed annually around the world on 10 December. It commemorates the anniversary of one of the world’s most groundbreaking global pledges.

Soludo emphasised that human rights are not negotiable and are as sacred as the values they represent, insisting that no one should be denied the full rights of human dignity.

The Anambra First Lady made the statement in a press release issued on Wednesday for the 2025 World Human Rights Day.

Speaking on the theme, “Let’s stand for equality, freedom, and dignity for all,” she said that for a better society to be achieved, everyone must look beyond differences in race, background, gender, and beliefs.

“Human rights are as sacred as the values they represent. Every human deserves the right to live, to safety, to succeed, and to thrive without fear or inhibition.

“It’s true that understanding human rights and preserving them are what make a society stronger and better.

“Our everyday lives rely heavily on how we treat others. We must look beyond differences in race, background, gender and beliefs,” she said.

Reflecting on the importance of unity and equality in society, she stressed the non-negotiable nature of human dignity, saying, “This uniqueness should unite us more than it divides us. No one deserves to live in a society ruled by fear, alienation, and extremism.

“Everyone — no matter their creed, cultural, political, and religious differences — deserves the full rights of human dignity and fairness. It’s not negotiable!”

In August, PUNCH Online reported that the wife of the Anambra State Governor, during the ‘International Day of Peace’, urged the promotion of peace, tolerance, and communal harmony in both family and societal contexts.

She called on women to be primary agents of peace, addressing issues from the home level to the broader community, urging Anambra women during their annual meetings to use the platform to foster communal and religious peace, address rising moral deficits, and tackle the quest for illicit wealth among youth.
