Happy 80th Birthday To A Father, A Husband And An Exceptional National Hero!
Alhaji (Dr.) Ibrahim Mallam Abba is a retired Public Servant, started his career in teaching, local government secretary, and finally as a Group Executive Director in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). His life reflects that of strong faith, institutional family values and exceptional national service and patriotism. He was born on January 15, 1946, in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, into a respected family of Mallams (Islamic scholars). He grew up in a large polygamous household, an upbringing that shaped his discipline, humility and strong sense of responsibility.
He is a devoted husband who deeply loves and cherishes his one and only wife, Hajiya Yagana Zanna Isa Munguno, to whom he has been happily married for over 48 years. He is immensely proud of his Seven (7) beautiful and highly accomplished daughters and considers family his greatest blessing and achievement in life. Their professions range from a Consultant Doctor, two engineers, an IT professional, a pharmacist and two Lawyers. A proud Kanuri man, he remains strongly connected to his culture, traditions and heritage. In his quiet moments, he enjoys simple pleasures, especially traditional meals such as Kuka soup with biski and man-shanu, which reminds him of home and his rich culture. He attended Bama Central Primary School and later Government Craft School, Maiduguri, before proceeding to Borno Teachers College, where he obtained his Teachers Grade II Certificate. He began his career as a teacher in Dikwa local government, Borno State, and later advanced his education at the Advanced Teachers College in Zaria. He subsequently enrolled at the School of Basic Studies (now Ahmadu Bello University), Zaria, as one of its pioneer students, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Sciences.
He completed his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the former Eastern Central State (now Anambra State), which he often describes as one of the most memorable years of his life. Upon returning to Borno State, he joined the North-Eastern State Government as a Community Development Inspector. He later studied at University College Cardiff, United Kingdom, where he earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Population Growth Studies. In 1978, he was appointed Executive Secretary of Bama Local Government by the former Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Mohammed Goni. After his tenure, he served as General Manager of Borno State Bricks and Clay Factory and later at the NEITEL Shoe and Tannery Factory in Maiduguri. Political changes later led him briefly into the private sector in Kano, where he worked as a General Manager before joining the NNPC in 1988.
At NNPC, he served as the pioneer Executive Director, Services of the then subsidiary of NNPC named – Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) in Benin, Edo State, after which he was reassigned as the Executive Director, Services at the Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemicals Company (KRPC). He was later promoted to Group General Manager, Administration, Personnel and Human Resources at NNPC headquarters in Lagos in 1992. He eventually retired as Group Executive Director (Corporate Services) in the year 2003. During his tenure, he championed critical reforms that professionalized NNPC’s human resource systems and improved staff welfare, including housing, medical care and pension benefits that extended even to retirees. Till date, his colleagues and direct/indirect reports in the NNPC described his time in service as that of being a ‘servant leader’! After his retirement, he went on to hold several Board positions as Non-Executive Director.
Despite witnessing Nigeria’s many challenges over the decades, Alhaji (Dr.) Ibrahim Mallam Abba remains a compulsive optimist who strongly believes that Nigeria can be better through unity, integrity, discipline and responsible leadership. He often preaches the great importance of Patriotism as a strong pillar of Nation building and urges the younger generation to learn Nigeria’s history and learn from the past, which would enable us in chartering a better course forward. He is a man known for avoiding and discouraging self-indulgence and greed, upholding strong moral values and serving his country with great honor.
At 80, he describes himself as most grateful to The Almighty Allah (SWT) for sparing his life in good health; as a fulfilled man content in his family life, proud of his roots, grateful for his opportunities, and satisfied that he served Nigeria with his full dedication. In recognition of his contributions to national development, he was awarded the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in 2004.
