2 killed as terrorists attack BDC market in Sokoto
At least two people were killed and a large sum of money stolen when suspected Lakurawa terrorists attacked Durusar Gawo village in Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
An eyewitness told Daily Trust that the assailants stormed the community around 2:50 p.m. on Thursday, targeting the Bureau de Change section of the local market.
About 11 armed men opened fire, killing two prominent businessmen, Alhaji Ummaru and Alhaji Sani, both known Bureau de Change operators.
It was gathered that another man was shot, and a significant amount of the Nigerien currency was carted away as residents fled.
“After the attack, two attackers returned on a motorcycle, telling residents the mission was complete. We closed our shops and ran for safety. No security personnel have arrived so far,” the source said.
The eyewitness added that the same group had infiltrated the market and nearby villages last Friday, rustling an unspecified number of livestock.
Residents expressed frustration over worsening insecurity, calling for lasting protection.
“We want security more than anything. Schools are closing, and people now live in fear. It feels like there is no government on the ground,” another resident said.
Efforts to get a police reaction were unsuccessful, as calls and text messages to DSP Ahmad Rufai, police spokesperson in Sokoto State, went unanswered as of press time last night.
