‘We are lawmakers, not actors’: Senator Adaramodu dismisses Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s return as political stunt
An Abuja High Court has dismissed the criminal charges brought by the Federal Government against Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, effectively ending a high-profile legal dispute that had captured nationwide attention.
Court documents indicate that the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation submitted a Notice of Discontinuance, which led the court to formally strike out the criminal defamation and related charges previously filed against the lawmaker.

The case arose from statements allegedly made by Akpoti-Uduaghan during a televised interview and had sparked widespread public discussion on freedom of expression, political responsibility, and the scope of prosecutorial authority within a democratic system.
The Notice of Discontinuance, dated December 12, 2025, brought suit number FHC/ABJ/CR/195/2025 to a close.
During Thursday’s proceedings, Justice C. N. Oji acknowledged the notice and ordered the case to be struck out. The judge emphasized that the development highlights the importance of exercising prosecutorial powers with caution.
“The court hopes this decision will encourage restraint, promote healing, and reinforce respect for the rule of law in our democratic processes,” he stated.
The Federal Government’s legal representative confirmed in court that the charges had been withdrawn.
“On behalf of the Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation, we have filed a notice of discontinuance in accordance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act. This action reflects the broader interests of justice and public confidence in our legal system,” the counsel explained.
After the court session, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan described the ruling as a validation of her stance.
“Today’s decision reinforces my faith in the rule of law. I will continue to serve my constituents and defend the democratic rights of all Nigerians,” she said, expressing gratitude to her legal team and supporters for their unwavering support throughout the legal battle.
The dismissal of the charges concludes months of legal controversy and public debate. Several civil society organizations and rights groups had previously criticized the prosecution, arguing that it was an attempt to suppress free speech and discourage political participation.
