Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has explained that his decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was motivated by the need to align the state with President Bola Tinubu’s political direction and ensure a harmonious working relationship with the federal government.
Fubara, who formally announced his defection earlier in the week, received his APC membership card on Friday at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
The card was presented to him by the Rivers APC Chairman, Chief Tony Okocha.
Speaking during the brief ceremony, the governor described his move as a “spiritual assignment,” noting that the political trajectory of Rivers State must align with that of the President for the sake of stability and development.
“We cannot pursue a different direction when the President is pursuing another. Joining the APC is part of our commitment to ensure a seamless working relationship and to contribute meaningfully to his re-election efforts in the state,” Fubara said.
He stated that his defection was aimed at safeguarding the state’s progress and ensuring strong collaboration with the federal government.
According to the governor, aligning with President Tinubu would help unlock development opportunities and secure the future of the state.
Fubara thanked APC leaders for their warm reception and pledged to strengthen the party’s structures ahead of future political engagements.
“This is now your home, Mr Chairman. We will keep the APC active and fully functional in Rivers State, and every need of the party will be taken care of,” he assured.
The governor’s defection marks a major realignment in Rivers State’s political landscape, potentially reshaping alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
