Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, on Thursday, presented cheques and scholarships to 47 families of deceased civil servants under the state’s Group Life Insurance Scheme.
The ceremony, held at the Government House in Benin City, saw the distribution of over ₦200 million in insurance benefits and educational scholarships to one member from each of the families, in partnership with Tangerine Life Insurance.
Okpebholo said the initiative was driven by humanity and the responsibility to support families who lost their breadwinners while in active service.
The governor said, “It is not just about insurance. It is about goodness. The important thing is that you receive your entitlements because of the painful loss you have suffered.
“Today, we are supporting you further by giving scholarships to one member of each family. This is our way of ensuring you are not left behind.”
He commended Tangerine Life Insurance for its efficiency, noting that the partnership has placed Edo among the leading states in Nigeria in pension and insurance reforms.
The Managing Director/CEO of Tangerine Life Insurance, Kehinde Borisade, praised the governor for transforming Edo into a model of pension reform and workers’ welfare.
“In implementing the Pension and Insurance Acts, Edo State stands out as one of the leading states, if not the leading state.
“Your Excellency has shown rare leadership by caring not only for active workers, but also for the families of those who have passed on. Few states in Nigeria do this,” he added.
He disclosed that the firm had paid benefits totalling over ₦200 million to the 47 families within the year, facilitated by the governor’s commitment to workers’ welfare.
Since assuming office, Okpebholo has prioritised workers’ welfare through measures including the increase of minimum wage, absorption of over 5,000 contract teachers into the civil service, and the regularisation of cleaners previously on meagre earnings.
The event further highlighted his administration’s focus on compassionate governance and institutional strengthening in the state.
