The Actors Guild of Nigeria has confirmed that its president-elect, Abubakar Yakubu, was involved in a tragic road accident in Lagos on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.
According to a statement signed by the outgoing AGN President, Emeka Rollas, the crash was caused by “an unexpected mechanical brake failure,” which led to a collision that claimed the life of a child and left the child’s mother injured.
He also claimed that the matter had been “resolved amicably” with the affected family.
He stated, “The Actors Guild of Nigeria is deeply saddened to confirm the involvement of the National President-Elect, Abubakar Yakubu, in a tragic road accident that occurred on Tuesday, 9th December, in Lagos.
“The accident, which was caused by an unexpected mechanical brake failure, led to a collision that tragically claimed the life of a child and left the child’s mother injured. She is currently receiving medical care.”
He added that immediately after the accident, Yakubu “cooperated fully” with law enforcement and emergency responders.
Confirming that AGN leaders visited the grieving family to offer support and condolences, he maintained that both parties had since resolved the matter amicably, acknowledging that “this was a tragic accident with no party at intentional fault.”
He added, “The matter has been amicably resolved with the family, who acknowledged that this was a tragic accident with no intentional fault. The family has shown remarkable grace and compassion, and we remain grateful for their understanding.”
Rollas then urged members of the public to avoid speculation or harmful commentary, appealing instead for “prayers, compassion and sensitivity” as investigations continue.
A veteran actor and administrator from Kaduna with over 25 years of experience in film, television, and theatre, Yakubu narrowly won the AGN presidential election on Saturday, December 6, 2025, beating his closest rival, Rita Daniels, with just three votes.
