No place for military rule in West Africa – Barau
The Deputy President of the Senate and First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Senator Barau Jibrin, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for swiftly approving Nigeria’s military intervention to help foil a coup attempt in the Republic of Benin. On Sunday, soldiers operating under the Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR) announced the overthrow of President Patrice Talon via a broadcast on the state-owned television station. The prompt deployment of Nigerian Armed Forces, following a formal request from Benin’s government, played a decisive role in aborting the coup and restoring order in the neighbouring country. In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Ismail Mudashir, Senator Barau praised President Tinubu for responding without hesitation to Benin’s appeal for assistance. Describing democracy as the only acceptable form of governance in the modern world, the senator stressed that military rule must not be allowed to resurface in West Africa. “Military rule has no place in our society. Democracy remains the best option for our subregion and continent,” he said.
Barau added that ECOWAS institutions remain committed to safeguarding democratic governance. He said the ECOWAS Parliament will continue to deepen legislative cooperation, parliamentary diplomacy, and regional integration to strengthen peace, security and shared prosperity across West Africa.
