Zamfara Records Zero Active Cholera Case, Moves to Develop Pandemic Preparedness Plan
Zamfara State Government says the cholera outbreak that recently affected several communities has been fully contained, with no active case currently recorded anywhere in the state.
The disclosure was made during an After-Action Review meeting on the cholera response, held at the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre in Gusau.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Nafisa Muhammad Maradun, who was represented by the Director of Public Health, Dr Yusuf Haske, confirmed that the outbreak had been brought under control. She described the development as evidence of Governor Dauda Lawal’s commitment to transparency, accountability and people-centred governance.
Providing an overview of the outbreak, she said the state recorded 15,464 cholera cases, out of which 15,265 patients were treated and discharged, while 192 deaths were documented across the 14 local government areas.
Dr Maradun said the state government is developing a robust Pandemic Preparedness Plan to better respond to future public health threats, including cholera, diarrhoea, cerebrospinal meningitis, heavy metal contamination and other diseases of public concern. She added that appreciation letters had been issued to all supporting partners for their contributions.
Speaking on behalf of development partners, the World Health Organisation (WHO) State Coordinator, Dr Raji Mukhtar, underscored the importance of timely planning, adherence to the Incident Management System and proper data reporting. He noted that early challenges in Zurmi and Anka created room for misinformation, especially after media reports from Gummi heightened public anxiety.
He, however, commended the harmonisation of partner support and the activation of the Incident Management System, which he said provided a unified command structure and ensured an effective response. He praised the state government for demonstrating strong political will by providing the resources needed at each stage of the outbreak.
Dr Mukhtar stressed the need for improved and coordinated data reporting at the local government level, particularly through Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers, to strengthen surveillance and early detection.
The meeting was attended by major health partners, including WHO, UNICEF, AFENET, Solidarity Support, IRC, Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), as well as relevant state ministries, departments and agencies. The session reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening public health systems and improving citizens’ wellbeing.
