NWUS holds maiden orientation for MBBS students
Northwest University Sokoto (NWUS) has conducted its maiden orientation programme for students of its Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS), as part of its efforts to make them aware and prepare for the pre-clinical phase of their medical training.
The orientation which was organised by the College of Health Sciences, was aimed at familiarising the students with academic expectations and practical exposure required at the second stage of their studies.
As part of the exercise, the students were carried along and toured to the Human Anatomy and Human Physiology laboratories at the College of Health Sciences of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH), in line with an existing Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two institutions.
The Provost of the College of Health Sciences of the University, Prof. Umar Mohammed, said the programme was designed to strengthen the students’ academic foundation and provide early practical exposure.
He said, “The pre-clinical stage requires students to build a solid background in anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, saying that collaboration with UDUTH would enhance hands-on learning and adherence to professional standards”.
Some of the students who spoke at the orientation course described the programme as insightful and encouraging.
A student that came from Imo State, Faith Celestine, said the tour of the laboratories, including the cadaver room, widened her understanding of medical training.
Another student, Sumayya Akibu Moyi, said the demonstration shaped her experience into the demands of the profession, adding that “she felt better prepared for the journey ahead”.
Kennedy Ellah from Cross River State said the visit strengthened his confidence in pursuing a medical career at NWUS.
Similarly, the MBBS course representative, Salmanu Kabiru, said the orientation provided students with firsthand experience of the facilities available for their training and encouraged them to focus more on their studies.
