TRUST DIALOGUE: Nigeria’s Insecurity Lasting Too Long – Olubadan
The Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has said insecurity in Nigeria has persisted for too long.
Oba Ladoja made the remarks at the 23rd Daily Trust Dialogue in Abuja, on Thursday.
He served as the Special Guest of Honour at the occassion.
Reacting to comments by Foreign Affairs Minister that Nigeria’s insecurity is largely regional, Oba Ladoja insisted that the situation had persisted for too long.
Daily Trust had reported that Tuggar, in an interview with CNN, stated that the unrest in some parts of Nigeria is largely regional, stressing that the country is being unfairly judged by isolated security incidents.
“I agree with him, but it is lasting too long. Nobody feels safe. You don’t know from where the next attack will come or who will be attacked next,” Olubadan said.
He emphasised that the country’s security challenges should not be viewed through a religious lens.
“I don’t agree that it’s a religious issue. It is not. But some perpetrators are making it look so for their own benefit.”
He further warned against downplaying the severity of insecurity, noting its broad impact on society and governance.
“Call it anything you like, banditry, kidnapping, anything associated with insecurity is something that we can’t afford,” Oba Ladoja warned.
The 23rd Daily Trust Dialogue, organised by Media Trust Group and themed “Nigeria’s Fourth Republic: What Is Working and What Is Not,” brought together key public figures to examine the country’s democratic journey and socio-economic challenges since 1999.
Other notable participants at the event were former Senate President Bukola Saraki, former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, and former House of Representatives member, Hon. Nnenna Elendu Ukeje.
