Ogun: Egba Economic Summit Urges Works Minister to Complete Idi Aba–Ajebo Road
The Egba Economic Summit Group has appealed to the Minister of Works to ensure the speedy completion of the Idi Aba–Abeokuta–Obafemi–Ajebo–Alapako express road, warning that prolonged delays pose serious risks to economic development and security in Egbaland and Ogun State.
The group expressed its concerns in a letter dated January 16, 2026, signed by its president, Dr. Gbenga Adeoye, and made available to journalists in Abeokuta.
The road, which links Abeokuta to the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, was awarded during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari but has suffered slow and inconsistent execution, according to the group.
In the letter, the summit commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and the Ministry of Works for ongoing infrastructure projects across the country, including the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, the Badagry–Sokoto road, and the night rehabilitation work on the Sango–Abeokuta road.
However, the group said it had a responsibility to draw attention to projects of strategic economic importance where progress has stalled.
“We hereby call your attention to the slow pace of work on the Abeokuta Idi Aba–OGTV–Ajebo–Obafemi express road, which runs through the Federal Medical Centre, OGTV and Ajebo to link the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway,” the letter said.
The summit raised eight major concerns, noting that while the segment of the road within Abeokuta city appears motorable, conditions deteriorate significantly beyond that point, making driving difficult and unsafe.
It also warned that the abandoned sections of the road threaten the planned relocation of the newly established Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta (FUMMSA), whose permanent site spans 170 hectares along the corridor.
According to the group, the road serves as a vital alternative route to the old Abeokuta–Ibadan road and has the potential to decongest traffic around the Ogere axis of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
The summit further noted that proper completion of the road, including a proposed diversion through Oyebola to Alapako-Oni, could transform Ajebo and surrounding communities into an industrial hub, boosting economic activity and job creation.
It also cautioned against lowering construction standards outside Abeokuta city, alleging that contractors often compromise quality after leaving urban centres.
“The excavation currently on the road has made life very difficult for motorists,” the group said, recalling that the road was previously a smooth and reliable route following its construction under the administration of former Ogun State governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba.
The Egba Economic Summit Group urged the minister to take urgent action to complete the project, stressing that it would have a direct and positive impact on the economy of Egbaland, Ogun State and Nigeria.
Copies of the letter were sent to prominent traditional rulers and leaders in Egbaland, including the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo; the Osile of Oke-Ona, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso; the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Prof. Saka Adelola Matemilola; and former Ogun State governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba.
