Rivers lawmakers pass confidence vote, back Tinubu for 2027

The Rivers State House of Assembly has passed a vote of confidence on President Bola Tinubu and urged him to seek reelection in 2027.

The House said its decision was an expression of appreciation to the President and confidence in his administration.

The call came after a unanimous motion adopted during its plenary on Wednesday, presided over by the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Speaker’s media aide, Martins Wachukwu.

The President, on March 18, 2025, declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, following the crisis involving members of the state House of Assembly loyal to the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The development removed Fubara, Deputy Governor, Prof Ngozi Odu, and members of the assembly from office, with Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas appointed as sole administrator.

Six months later, precisely on September 18, 2025, the emergency rule was lifted, allowing the governor and the assembly to return to their offices.

The lawmakers who commenced legislative duties immediately after the emergency rule lauded the President and called on him to run for a second term in office.

The statement read, “In a remarkable display of appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, and confidence in his administration, the Rivers State House of Assembly at its 37th legislative sitting on Wednesday resolved on a motion calling on the President to run for a second term in office.”

Moving the motion signed by 26 members, the Leader, Major Jack, highlighted the essence of passing a vote of confidence on the President, noting the role he played in stabilising the state.

Jack said Tinubu demonstrated his commitment to Rivers people by appointing notable indigenes into positions of trust in his administration.

According to the statement, lawmakers who contributed to the debate listed ongoing federal projects in the state and appointments given to their constituents.

They commended the President’s economic policies, noting the increased funds available to states and local governments.

Commenting on the motion, the Speaker, Amaewhule, described Tinubu as “a compassionate father of the nation.”

He said the President was committed to improving the country’s fortunes, adding that the dividends of his policies were visible.

Amaewhule also recalled the visit of prominent Rivers stakeholders to the President and said Tinubu had fulfilled his promises, including appointing 39 indigenes of the state into federal positions.

When the question was put to a vote, the House voted in the affirmative.

It passed a vote of confidence in the President for his purposeful leadership and commended the President for his love for Rivers State through his appointments and projects.

The lawmakers conveyed the unflinching support and loyalty of the House to the President through the FCT minister, calling on the President to run for a second term.

The House urged members to immediately commence sensitisation and mobilisation of constituents for the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Recall that the lawmakers who openly declared for the All Progressives Congress in the heat of their crisis with Fubara, insisted they did not defect from the Peoples Democratic Party.
