Kwara: Abducted traditional ruler still in captivity – Council chairman
The abducted traditional ruler of Bayagan community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Oba Kamilu Salami, remains in captivity, the council chairman, Hajji Femi Yusuf, confirmed on Monday.
Widespread reports had circulated on Sunday claiming that the monarch and six other captives had escaped following a vigilante operation around the Eku Idaji axis near Igbaja. The unverified information spread quickly across several communities and social media platforms.
However, security agencies and elected representatives from the area dismissed the reports, saying there was no official confirmation that the monarch had regained freedom.
Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, told Daily Trust that security operatives were still combing the forest.
“I don’t know about that. I just spoke with my DPO, who is there. As I speak with you, my men are still in the bush,” he said.
Similarly, the lawmaker representing the constituency, Hon. Ganiyu Afolabi Salau, said he had not sighted the monarch. “I visited the community this morning and met his wife. Based on our discussion, I don’t think he has escaped,” he said.
In a telephone interview on Monday night, the Ifelodun LG chairman described the reported escape as “mere social media claims.”
He added, “We are still looking for him, and our vigilantes, soldiers, and police are still in the bush. The claim that he has escaped is false. We are not relenting in our efforts to rescue him and address the security challenges we are facing.”
Bandits were said to have demanded N150 million for the monarch’s release. They reportedly contacted residents on Sunday and allowed the ruler to speak briefly to confirm he was alive.
During the short call, Oba Salami appealed for help and recounted being taken through thick forests on a motorcycle for over five hours.
The monarch was abducted around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday when gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles attacked his farm. Four others were also kidnapped from a neighbouring community during the attack.
