Declare state of emergency in FCT health, education sectors, monarch urges Wike
The Agabe of Ugbada-Gwargwada in Kuje Area Council, Alhaji Hussaini Agabi Mam, has urged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to declare a state of emergency in the territory’s health and primary education sectors.
The monarch made the call during an interview with our reporter at his palace on Friday, citing the deplorable condition of health centres and primary schools, particularly in rural communities, which he described as an eyesore requiring urgent government intervention.
He said several health centres within his chiefdom are in a dilapidated state and suffer from severe manpower shortages, a situation he noted has negatively affected residents seeking medical attention.
“For instance, the health centre in my community has only one personnel attending to a population of over 2,000 people. Other workers there are merely volunteers,” he said.
Alhaji Mam also lamented the poor state of primary schools in rural areas under his chiefdom, noting that some school buildings are dilapidated, with roofs blown off by windstorms.
According to him, most primary schools in the area lack adequate teachers and basic infrastructure, making the learning environment unconducive for pupils.
Describing the FCT minister as a “workaholic,” the monarch commended Wike for giving Abuja city and its satellite towns a facelift through massive infrastructural development.
“In fact, my community has benefited from the minister’s interventions. The road from Rubochi to Gwargwada has been tarred with asphalt overlay and is about 90 per cent completed. I commend him for that,” he said.
He further urged the minister to intensify efforts to link the road from Gwargwada to Sabo-Kuje town in order to boost socio-economic activities in the area.
The monarch added that opening up the road would also deny kidnappers the opportunity to use the route as a hideout.
“Once the road from Gwargwada is opened and connected to Sabo and Kuje town, it will deprive kidnappers who currently take advantage of its deplorable state to operate in the area,” he added.
