Nigeria delivered a dominant performance in the shooting events at the inaugural West African Paralympic Games in Abeokuta, winning every gold medal on offer in the discipline, The PUNCH reports.
The six-day multi-sport event, held from November 28 to December 3, 2025, brought together more than 700 athletes from across West Africa for the first edition of the regional Para Games.
In a clean sweep of the shooting competitions, Nigeria’s athletes demonstrated remarkable precision and consistency across both pistol and rifle events.
Aliyu Abubakar won the gold in the men’s SH1 pistol event, while Lawal Hallmat triumphed in the women’s SH1 pistol category.
The Nigerian duo of Adedimeji Adeniji and Bala Mary also dominated the SH1 mixed pistol competition.
The rifle events were equally fruitful for Nigeria, as Benjamin Isaac claimed the men’s SH1 rifle title, with Ileyemi Olayinka winning the women’s event.
In the SH1 mixed rifle category, Rebecca Ayuba and Abel Enoch combined to capture gold, completing Nigeria’s comprehensive haul in the sport.
The victories contributed to a total medal tally of six golds, leaving Nigeria unchallenged at the top of the shooting standings.
Other nations also made podium appearances, though they could not match Nigeria’s supremacy.
Ghana won a single gold through Emmanuel Amobire in the SH2 open category which Nigeria didn’t participate in, alongside three silver and one bronze medals.
Cape Verde finished with two silvers and five bronzes, while Cameroon collected two silvers and a bronze. Senegal and Togo failed to reach the podium in shooting events.
The success underscored Nigeria’s dominance in the Para shooting arena in West Africa, with the performances of the country’s athletes reflecting careful preparation and technical mastery.
The WAPARA Games, designed to promote Para sports and provide a platform for regional athletes, concluded on Wednesday (yesterday), leaving Nigeria firmly at the summit of the shooting medal table and setting a high standard for future editions of the competition.
