Two people were confirmed dead while five others trapped following the collapse of a section of a private rice mill, NIA-AGRI, in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at the mill’s facility, where a large metal structure gave way, burying workers beneath the wreckage.
Rescue operations to get the other trapped workers out of the collapsed structure were still ongoing as of Wednesday evening.
A combined rescue team comprising personnel of the Kebbi State Fire Service and government emergency response agencies was mobilised to the site to locate and rescue the victims.
The state’s Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, assured that a full investigation would be conducted after the completion of the rescue operation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. Senator Tafida, who led a government delegation to the scene, said the visit was to ascertain the extent of the damage and personally oversee the emergency response.
He expressed sympathy to the management and staff of NIA-AGRI, particularly the families of the deceased workers, describing the incident as tragic.
