How Kogi’s varsity conquered cultism, insecurity
The Vice Chancellor of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba , Professor Marietu Ohunene Tenuche says the menace of cultism and insecurity nearly finished the institution to its very foundation, claiming to have created fear and instability on the campus for years. Professor Tenuche disclosed this on Wednesday while addressing the stakeholders as part of the activities to mark the 7th combined convention ceremony at the institution’s campus at Anyigba. The Vice Chancellor said as the time she assumed office in April 2020, the University was grappling with serious security concerns, cult related violence, loss of lives and need for additional infrastructural facilities, with several people believing that the situation was overwhelming. She stressed that the management team under her watch adopted a multi-agency security framework involving the Nigeria Police, the military, local vigilante groups, and private security outfits which brought the situation under control . ”Continuous patrols were introduced, and zero tolerance for cultism was enforced. We launched and Sustained sensitization and moral re-orientation programmes across Faculties. ”lam pleased to state as a matter of public record that since 2020, not a single gunshot has been recorded on our campus. Peace, confidence, and stability were fully restored and sustained”, she said. The Vice Chancellor added that “with security restored, our administration decisively addressed academic and social misconduct. Examination malpractice, academic fraud, indecent dressing, and unethical practices were addressed heads-on. ”Class representatives that served as middlemen between students and erring lecturers were eliminated, reinforcing transparency and integrity. We redirected student energy toward productive engagement”. While she attributed the current security challenges in the society to poverty , ungoverning space or vast land, she stated that with community support, intelligence gathering and the dogged will to tackle the bandits in their hideouts in the forest , the insecurity situation will be overcomed . ”The most effective way to tackle banditry , kidnapping and associated crimes is to carry the battle to their hideout in the forest. ”With sound intelligent gathering and community support ,the government should be able to flush the bandits out effectively; and the fears of invading the campus or attack on roads and communities will reduce greatly. ”It may be easy to protect the students within the campus, but difficult to protect them on the road. We will continue to mount pressure on security operatives, community stakeholders, including traditional rulers to ensure enabling environment is created for the safety of the students”, she said . Professor Tenuche who is at the twilight of her administration says the major strength of her administration has been the continuity of government support. According to her the state government intervention has led to academic excellence and infrasture transformation in the institution. She said :”Following the end of the tenure of former Governor Yahaya Bello, his successor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, not only sustained ,but expanded government commitment to the University. ”One of his earliest interventions was the revival of the MBBS programme, which had been suspended for twelve years. We recorded strong accreditation outcomes across programmes and secured approval for 12 new academic programmes. ”The progress recorded at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba is the result of clear vision, institutional discipline, and unwavering political support”. A total of 26,160 Graduands will be awarded First Degrees across the five academic sessions, with 178 graduands receiving first class honour in the 7th combined convocation ceremony.
