Fire guts 4 shops in FCT community
Four shops and valuables worth thousands of naira have been destroyed by fire in the Yaba community of Abaji Area Council of the FCT.
A witness, Usman Ibrahim, said the incident occurred on Thursday around 11pm.
He said, “Nobody can say what actually caused the fire because the shop owners put off their generators. The fire broke out in one of the shops after business hours.
“Vigilantes on patrol discovered smoke billowing from the premises and immediately raised an alarm. However, because the structures were built of wood and zinc, the fire spread rapidly. By the time the owners arrived, all four shops had been razed.’’
The destroyed items, he added, included four generators, electronic gadgets and mobile phones.
One of the victims, Shuaibu Umar, who operates a POS business and sells electronics, said, “I was almost asleep when I got a call at about 11pm that fire had gutted my shop. Before I could arrive at the scene, everything had been burnt down.”
Reacting to the incident, the Etsu of Yaba, Alhaji Yakubu Ibrahim Ndatsu, expressed sadness over the loss.
He consoled the victims and prayed for divine intervention, while advising business owners to double-check their premises before closing each day.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Abaji Area Council, Alhaji Abubakar Umar Abdullahi, has set up a committee to assess the damage.
The committee is led by the council’s Secretary, Mr. Agaba Nuku, alongside the Chief of Staff, Mohammed Kandi, and the Supervisory Councillor for Health.
