APC sweeps Borno LG poll, wins 27 chairmanship seats

The All Progressives Congress has emerged winner of the chairmanship and councillorship elections in all 27 local government areas in the December 13 council elections in Borno State.

The list of chairmen-elect, earlier declared winners by returning officers, was officially announced by the Chairman of the Borno State Independent Electoral Commission (BOSIEC), Alhaji Tahiru Shettima, at a news conference on Monday in Maiduguri.

Shettima said BOSIEC did not create any “roadblock” for political parties interested in contesting the elections.

He said that despite holding several meetings with stakeholders, only six political parties participated in the elections.

“I think the commission has done its best and the election was free, fair, inclusive, and transparent,” the BOSIEC chairman said.

Shettima insisted that all BOSIEC returning officers were persons of high integrity and intellectual capacity, drawn from academia and technocratic backgrounds.

“So, BOSIEC headquarters collected the results as submitted by the returning officers and electoral officers.

“We have aggregated everything for the 27 local government areas, and our task this evening is to announce the list of chairmen-elect,” he explained.

The BOSIEC chairman also declared that the election was successfully completed, saying the results showed it was keenly contested by different individuals.

He, however, urged the elected chairmen to remain focused and show determination in providing social amenities at the grassroots level.

Shettima said the chairmen-elect should also reflect on the voter turnout, which he said showed that local government remained closest to the people, adding that grassroots communities were interested in political participation at that level.

He further thanked the Armed Forces, police, and other security agencies for their support in ensuring the smooth conduct of the elections.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the election was contested by six political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Labour Party (LP), and People’s Redemption Party (PRP).
