Ex-principal emerges ADP’s Osun governorship candidate

A retired school principal, Adeagbo Yemisi, has emerged as the candidate of the Action Democratic Party for the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.

A statement signed by David Olatunji on behalf of the Osun ADP chairman, Toye Ola-Akinola, and obtained in Osogbo on Sunday, said Adeagbo, an indigene of Osogbo, emerged as the party’s flagbearer after a primary election observed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The statement described Adeagbo’s emergence as historic, noting that she is the first and only woman in the race for the Osun governorship election, adding that she has accepted her nomination.

“The governorship candidate, notably the only female aspirant in the race, brings a wealth of experience to the contest. She is a former educationist, seasoned administrator, activist and comrade, having served as a school principal and a committed member of the Nigeria Union of Teachers.

“Her background in advocacy and public service positions her as a capable and compassionate leader with a deep understanding of grassroots realities,” the statement read in part.

In her acceptance speech, Adeagbo commended the leadership of the party and the delegates for the confidence reposed in her.

She assured that if elected, her administration would “move the state from its current position to a model state that others across the federation will look up to as an example of purposeful governance.”

She declared that the ADP remains “the only truly people-oriented party, built on solid structures, free from internal crises, and driven by service rather than personal ambition,” pledging that the party would demonstrate its strength at the polls and emerge victorious.

Adeagbo also called on the electorate to support her candidacy in the collective pursuit of good governance, inclusive leadership, accountability and sustainable development.

The PUNCH earlier reported that political parties fielding candidates in the August 8, 2026, Osun governorship election have a December 15 deadline to submit the names of their candidates.

Meanwhile, the immediate past Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Bola Oyebamiji, on Saturday emerged as the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the forthcoming governorship election.

Oyebamiji’s emergence followed a motion moved by two aspirants, Kunle Adegoke (SAN) and Senator Babajide Omoworare, at the party’s primary held at Ebunoluwa Group of Schools, Osogbo.

The Chairman of the APC governorship primary committee and Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, subsequently subjected the motion to a voice vote, which received overwhelming support from party members present.
