FG, APC govs donate N8bn to Singer market fire victims
The Federal Government has announced a donation of N5 billion to victims of the recent fire outbreak at the Singer Market in Kano.
Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed the intervention on Monday during a sympathy visit to the market, where goods and property worth billions of naira were destroyed in Saturday’s inferno.
Shettima, who described the incident as a national tragedy, said the loss was not only to Kano State but to the entire country.
He prayed for the victims and asked Allah to avert future disasters of such magnitude.
During the visit, the vice president was accompanied by the governors of Jigawa, Kebbi and Imo states.
Chairman of the Singer Market Traders Association, Junaid Zakari, commended the Federal Government for what he called a timely and generous gesture.
Meanwhile, Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has also announced that the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors have donated the sum of N3billion to the victims of the fire.
He confirmed the donation while speaking at his formal defection to the party at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.
He assured that the funds would be used judiciously to support affected traders and revive business activities in the market.
The fire burnt more than 1,000 shops and kiosks in northern Nigeria’s biggest commodity hub.
Fire Service authorities said they are still investigating to ascertain the cause of the fire and the severity of damage to the traders.
