Yobe: 1 person killed, 87 injured in trailer accident
An accident involving a trailer has claimed the life of one passenger and left 87 others injured on the Potiskum–Azare road in Potiskum LGA of Yobe State.
The accident occurred at about 2pm on Wednesday at the Potiskum entrance roundabout when the trailer conveying passengers to the Potiskum Cattle Market lost balance and overturned.
According to survivors, the trailer was carrying close to 100 people from Katagum LGA of Bauchi State to the cattle market when the incident happened.
One of the survivors, Amir Dauda, who spoke from his hospital bed, said, “We were coming from Azare to the Potiskum Cattle Market. As we got close to the roundabout, the driver tried to maneuver, and suddenly the vehicle tumbled and fell. People were shouting and many of us were thrown on top of one another.”
When Daily Trust correspondent visited the emergency unit of the Potiskum Specialist Hospital, many of the victims were seen lying on the floor due to the limited space in the Accident and Emergency Unit.
The spokesperson of the Yobe State Police Command, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the accident and the casualty rate.
