Two killed, 16 injured in Plateau road crash
Two persons have lost their lives and 16 others injured in an auto crash involving a trailer and five cars around Polo Roundabout in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Peter Yakubu Longsan, Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, confirmed the incident, stating that it happened on Sunday evening.
Longsan explained that the injured victims had been rushed to hospitals within the state capital.
He said, “The accident involved a ladened tanker and five other vehicles. The crash was reported to the FRSC at about 1849 hours (6:49 pm) and we immediately went for the rescue.
“18 people were involved, 2 male adults died on the spot, 16 others who suffered various degrees of injury were taken to Plateau State Specialist Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BUTH). The corpses of the deceased were deposited at BUTH.
“Eye witnesses reported that the tanker lost brakes immediately after the Plateau State Specialist Hospital Roundabout and kept descending until it finally crashed and rested on vehicles to take a stationary position. In order to avert conflagration, sister agencies mobilized themselves and put hands on deck, cordon the vicinity, and diverted traffic to ensure the safety of road users.
“Thankfully, there was no spillage of the content of the tanker, as the risk of fire outbreak became low. The sister agencies present at the scene included the Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigerian Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, Officers and Men of Operation Rainbow, Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), the Nigerian Army, Federal Fire Service, the Vehicle Inspection Officers, and the men of the Nigerian Red Cross Society,” he added.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC in the state, Olajide E. Mogaji, appreciated the existing strategic synergy among the stakeholders and the cooperation with the community to ensure safety for all.
He urged all road users to stay safe, especially during this festive period when people are travelling to various places.
Our correspondent reports that the incident came two weeks after a similar incident occurred around Zaria road and Jos-Bauchi road where 19 persons were killed, including students of University of Jos.
