Onyedika, Chukwueze lead Super Eagles’ Best Performers
The Super Eagles of Nigeria sealed a flawless group stage at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 with a comfortable 3-1 win over Uganda.
A heavily rotated side consisting mostly fringe players expertly dispatched the Cranes, and players who put in excellent performance are recognized.
Raphael Onyedika:
The Club Brugge midfielder took the rare opportunity by the scruff of the neck with a man of the match display. Onyedika not only scored two of the three goals, but made the pre-assist pass that led to Paul Onuachu’s opener.
He briefly struggled at the start of the match but once settled, he put in a masterclass performance that included the highest number of passes (72), and highest pass success rate (97%).
The 24-year-old has been churning out this kind of display in the Belgian League and UEFA Champions League steadily, and his display against Uganda is no coincidence.
Samuel Chukwueze:
His runs from deep hurt Uganda severally and was a key part of attack that produced three goals, supplying the assists for Onyedika’s brace.
The Fulham winger hugged the flank with driving runs and was the most fouled player, contributed a 95% pass success rate from 86 touches, and had a match-high five key passes. One of his best matches as a Super Eagle.
Paul Onuachu:
The lanky 6.7ft striker was given another shot at representing Nigeria and he fully grabbed it. He finished with aplomb for the opener, netting his first goal for Nigeria in almost five years, and showed good positioning on a rare AFCON start. The 31-year-old’s performance is an indication that he will be ready when called upon in the knockout phase.
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru:
He was the link from midfield to attack and he played the role to perfection in the opening goal with an off-the-ball run that was spotted by Onyedika.
The Lazio utility player showed once again why he could be a viable alternative to the equally energetic Frank Onyeka with better creativity and decision-making.
