Yobe emir urges govt to employ teachers
The Emir of Gudi in Yobe State, Alhaji Isma’ila Ahmed Gadaka, has urged the state government to bridge the widening gap in the education sector by employing more teachers in primary and secondary schools.
The royal father made the call during an interview with journalists at his residence in Damaturu shortly after embarking on a personal inspection tour of public schools within his domain.
The traditional ruler explained that the inspection became necessary to ensure that government investments in education were properly utilised, while also identifying challenges that the emirate could help address.
He said that although the Yobe State Government had invested heavily in the education sector through the construction and reconstruction of classrooms, as well as the provision of learning materials, some schools still lacked teachers to handle classes.
Alhaji Gadaka noted that, in response to the shortage, the emirate council, in collaboration with district heads, had engaged degree and NCE holders to voluntarily teach in various community schools pending approval and intervention by the state government.
The emir further lamented that even in schools where teachers were available, some deliberately obtained excuses from their headmasters and principals to leave their duty posts thereby leaving classrooms without teachers.
According to him, some parents also prefer to send their children to the farm or to hawk food items, stressing that education should be treated as a priority and that sending children to school is mandatory.
The monarch disclosed that he had directed all village and district heads to regularly monitor schools within their respective areas, warning that the emirate council would not take negligence lightly.
He also promised to engage the local government chairman and the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education to explore ways of resolving the shortage of teachers across schools in his domain.
