The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced a change in the official designation of January 15, the day set aside annually by the Federal Government to honour personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).
Henceforth, the day will be known as Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, replacing the former title, Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
The announcement was made by Samaila Uba, Director, Defence Information, who explained that the new name was adopted to more accurately capture the full essence of the annual commemoration.
According to the military, while the day has traditionally focused on honouring fallen heroes, particularly through solemn ceremonies such as the laying of wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the revised designation reflects a broader objective.
“The new title underscores the dual purpose of the occasion: celebrating serving and retired personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, while also remembering and honouring those who paid the supreme price in defence of the nation,” the statement said.
It noted that the commemoration recognises the sacrifices of fallen soldiers who laid down their lives to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and unity.
It also acknowledges the courage, commitment and professionalism of officers and men currently serving across various theatres of operation to safeguard lives and property nationwide.
The Forces explained that activities marking the occasion are usually preceded by a week-long programme, featuring a series of events aimed at honouring military personnel and engaging the public.
The celebrations typically culminate in a grand military parade and a wreath-laying ceremony on January 15.
As part of the rebranding, the Defence Headquarters called on the media to align with the new nomenclature in their reportage.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria respectfully urges the media to adopt the term ‘Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day’ in all future reports and coverage,” the military said.
It also expressed appreciation to the media for its continued support of the Armed Forces, particularly in the ongoing fight against insecurity across the country, and conveyed optimism that the collaboration between the military and the media would grow stronger in the years ahead.
