FG sets reform agenda as polytechnics tackle corruption, innovation deficit
The Federal Government in a bid to develop the educational ecosystem, has set in motion a reform agenda to transform polytechnic education as a pillar of national development.
Speaking against the backdrop of the theme, “Transforming Polytechnic Education in Nigeria: Innovation, Good Governance and Sustainability for National Development,” Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa reaffirmed the commitment of the Tinubu administration to reposition polytechnics as engines of skills, productivity and industrial growth.
He described innovation as the “heartbeat” of the sector, urging institutions to strengthen entrepreneurship centres, research hubs and industry partnerships that convert ideas into market-ready solutions.
The minister’s message resonated strongly with earlier interventions by the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu SAN, who laid bare endemic corrupt practices in tertiary institutions. Procurement fraud, diversion and misappropriation of funds, payroll manipulation, and result and certificate racketeering, he warned, have eroded standards, weakened infrastructure and damaged public trust. For Dr. Alausa, these revelations underscored why good governance must anchor any meaningful reform.
“The era of impunity in our institutions is over,” the Minister declared, insisting on transparency, ethical leadership, fiscal discipline and zero tolerance for corruption. He charged Governing Councils and management teams to avoid conflicts of interest, prioritise merit and submit to timely audits, noting that accountability is essential to attract investment and restore confidence in public education.
Earlier, in his welcome address, the Chairman of COHEADS, Dr Sani Usman Tunga, urged participants that polytechnics and colleges of technology occupy a strategic position in Nigeria’s future, tasked with producing the skilled, innovative, and entrepreneurial workforce required to diversify the economy, reduce unemployment, and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
